Top 4 SEO Penalties You Need To Know About

Everyone asks how they can improve their Google ranking. However, often the question people should be asking is what not to do or what to remove from a website. We find that many clients are doing exactly the opposite of what they should be doing and are in fact hurting their rankings. Google calls these “Black Hat” practices, and doing those things will highly damage your visibility online.

Google decides who to show based on the quality of the content, user experience, quality of the mobile site, and how that relates to the search query. Here are some important tips to remember that will help you rank better and generate more leads.

1. Unrelated links

Unrelated links on a site is a big problem and will damage ranking significantly. Google calls these unnatural links because they don’t make sense with the content on the site. All links on the website and in the content should link to the correct place and should be related to the content on the website. This is a no-brainer – you shouldn’t send users to links that aren’t beneficial.

2. Copied content

Duplicate content issues in 2017 have a major effect on a site’s SEO. Be sure to write specific content for each page of your site. Don’t use the same content twice.

3. Poorly written content

Content on a website should be written with the user in mind. Do not unnaturally stack the content with keywords, repeat city names unnaturally, or write content merely for the search engine. When writing content, a good rule of thumb is to ask this question: “Will this content actually help the customer?”.

4. A site that's not mobile friendly

Having a site that is not optimized for mobile will most definitely decrease a site’s ranking. Google has said that it will give significant preference to sites that are easy to use on a mobile device. This is one of the biggest problems we see with our clients’ websites.

These four tips are important to remember and can help you get on your way to a site that brings you more leads. If you have any of these issues, don’t hesitate to give us a call to discuss your issue. For a full list of Google’s penalties, read this report by Search Engine Land.
