Your website is your company’s chance for a good first impression with your customers. All they know about your brand and why your business exists is what they see on your website. But when is building a new website a good business decision? Deciding whether to build a new website is an important business calculation that can be answered by asking a few simple questions. Whether you have a 5-year-old website or a brand-new site, every business owner should ask these questions:
1. Does my site quickly sum up my company’s services?
You have only a few seconds to capture the interest of a visitor, and if they can’t understand what you do and what makes you different, they won’t call you. Your customer should be able to quickly understand your brand without leaving the home page.
2. Does my website display well on a mobile device or tablet?
A large percentage of your customers will visit your site on their mobile device. Having a good mobile site will ensure they will stay and will also help you rank better in Google’s search results. Not having a site that formats correctly for mobile devices will mean lower placement on Google and fewer site visitors.
3. Does my site look cluttered or crowded?
Your website needs to clearly convey the messages of your brand and having a site that is overly crowded distracts from that. The brain looks for patterns, and a site that is built correctly will guide the eyes toward what you want them to see and do. If you want your potential customer to call your business, tell them what makes you different and then make it easy for them to contact you.
4. Am I using a site builder like Squarespace, Wix, or GoDaddy?
These site builders are easy to get started with but can be overly restrictive in what changes you are allowed to make. Many times, templated website builders will not let you make design changes, which could leave your site looking boring, unimaginative, and dated. Also, it’s worth noting, that if you decide to leave or change hosting, your website and content may not be transferable.
5. Is my website better than my competitors’?
The average customer goes to three competitor sites before deciding. If your site is worse than your competitors’ site, you could be losing customers.
6. Does my site rank well on search engines like Google and Bing?
A poorly ranking site could be an indication of errors and issues that need to be corrected. Sometimes the best course of action is to rebuild the site with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in mind.
Keep these questions in mind when deciding to rebuild or redo your website. A well-built site is an investment in your business and can be a revenue generator that can take your company to the next level.
