In October 2018, Google announced that it is sunsetting Google+ in 2019. Between extremely low engagement and a major security breach, Google declared that there were “significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers’ expectations.”
But with any major change, especially to an internet giant like Google, people wonder what the ripple effects might be for them and their business. Here are 4 things that you need to know:
Google is keeping and improving an enterprise version of Google+.
Although the social network aspect of Google+ never really took off, Google found that the platform did have significant potential for facilitating internal collaboration and communication for businesses using G Suite. Google announced that though they are discontinuing the consumer version, they will be working toward an enterprise version of Google+.
Businesses, organizations, and individuals should remove the Google+ button from their websites.
Does your website, social media profiles, or email signature (to name a few) include a link or button to your Google+ profile? Be sure to remove those links or buttons so that you don’t have dead ends in your digital marketing materials.
The Google+ shutdown will not affect your Google My Business page.
Thankfully, Google+ and Google My Business are separate, so you don’t have to worry about losing your business’s Google listing. You will, however, want to make sure that your Google My Business listing is updated and has complete information so that you can maximize the benefits of your profile.
Google+’s departure will have little to no effect on your SEO.
Unless Google+ was your main social media presence and you put significant work into it, the Google+ shutdown will have little or no effect on your business’s SEO. If Google+ was your main social media presence, you may want to download your Google+ data. And then it’s time to move on to the platforms that do have high traffic and engagement, such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
